Peptidomimetics Targeting the Polo-box Domain of Polo-like Kinase 1

Peptidomimetics Targeting the Polo-box Domain of Polo-like Kinase 1

Polo-like kinase 1 (Plk1) is a master regulator of mitosis, initiating key steps of cell cycle regulation, and its overexpression is associated with certain types of cancer. In this study, the authors carefully designed peptides that were able to bind to Plk1 at a location that is important for its proper localization and function. Future studies could further develop these peptides to selectively target Plk1 in cancer cells and induce mitotic arrest.

Optimizing AI image detection using a Convolutional Neural Network model with Fast Fourier Transform

Recent advances in generative AI have made it increasingly hard to distinguish real images from AI-generated ones. Traditional detection models using CNNs or U-net architectures lack precision because they overlook key spatial and frequency domain details. This study introduced a hybrid model combining Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) with Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to better capture subtle edge and texture patterns.

Quantitatively evaluating changes in art critique journals’ use of moral language across time

Quantitatively evaluating changes in art critique journals’ use of moral language across time

The authors use MoralBERT, a BERT-based machine learning model, to analyze the prevalence and evolution of moral language in art critique journals from 1960 to 2015. They draw on Moral Foundations Theory to examine changes in five virtue and five vice foundations over time. They discover slight increases in degradation and care and a decrease in purity among otherwise stable patterns. The study is a novel application of computational moral analysis in a domain not typically associated with such tools. Although the moral signals were relatively faint, the study offers insights into shifting art world discourses and models an exciting method for future inquiry.

RNAi-based Gene Therapy Targeting ZGPAT Promotes EGF-dependent Wound Healing

RNAi-based Gene Therapy Targeting ZGPAT Promotes EGF-dependent Wound Healing

Wound-healing involves a sequence of events, such as inflammation, proliferation, and migration of different cell types like fibroblasts. Zinc Finger CCCH-type with G-Patch Domain Containing Protein (ZGPAT), encodes a protein that has its main role as a transcription repressor by binding to a specific DNA sequence. The aim of the study was to find out whether inhibiting ZGPAT will expedite the wound healing process by accelerating cell migration. This treatment strategy can provide a key to the development of wound healing strategies in medicine and cellular biology.

Investigating the Role of the Novel ESCRT-III Recruitment Factor CCDC11 in HIV Budding: A Potential Target for Antiviral Therapy

Investigating the Role of the Novel ESCRT-III Recruitment Factor CCDC11 in HIV Budding: A Potential Target for Antiviral Therapy

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In this work, Takemaru et al explored the role of Coiled-Coil Domain-Containing 11 (CCDC11) in HIV-1 budding. Their results suggest that CCDC11 is critical for efficient HIV-1 budding, potentially indicating CCDC11 a viable target for antiviral therapeutics without major side effects.

Rhythmic lyrics translation: Customizing a pre-trained language model using stacked fine-tuning

Rhythmic lyrics translation: Customizing a pre-trained language model using stacked fine-tuning

Neural machine translation (NMT) is a software that uses neural network techniques to translate text from one language to another. However, one of the most famous NMT models—Google Translate—failed to give an accurate English translation of a famous Korean nursery rhyme, "Airplane" (비행기). The authors fine-tuned a pre-trained model first with a dataset from the lyrics domain, and then with a smaller dataset containing the rhythmical properties, to teach the model to translate rhythmically accurate lyrics. This stacked fine-tuning method resulted in an NMT model that could maintain the rhythmical characteristics of lyrics during translation while single fine-tuned models failed to do so.

Innovative fake health news detection: Integrating emotional features into graph neural networks

Innovative fake health news detection: Integrating emotional features into graph neural networks

This manuscript tackles a major social issue in the health news sector, with social media being one of the primary sources of information and a prime spot to propagate fake news. The author proposes X-HND , which is a unique architecture that combines emotional and contextual analysis in a Graph Neural Network to accurately detect fake news. This was a multi-step process which involved the creation of a custom health news dataset (HNDataset), and an emotional variant that uses RoBERTa to extract emotion. These dataset were then used to prove the hypothesis that accuracy increases when the custom dataset is used to train the model and that with the integration of emotion capture, the detection accuracy increases further.

VISTA inhibitor CA170 combined with <i>KRAS</i> vaccine enhances immune response in lung cancer

Here the authors investigated a combination therapy to target the Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog mutation in lung cancer, by analyzing publicly available data. Their findings indicate that the combination therapy of CA170 and Kvax enhances helper T cell function and improves cytotoxic T lymphocyte infiltration, while Kvax alone drives plasma and memory B cell proliferation.
