In the email that provides your 10-character confirmation code, you will also receive the link to our submission platform to officially submit your manuscript. The email will also contain an instructional PDF that explains how to register for an account and navigate our submission system and the steps needed to submit your manuscript.
For legal reasons, a teacher, mentor, or Principal Investigator of a lab must submit on behalf of the student authors. See our Author Eligibility page for more information on who can serve in these roles. The adult who submits will be considered the “Adult Corresponding Author” and will be responsible for communicating with journal staff and ensuring requested edits are addressed prior to any resubmission. A student should NEVER submit his/her own manuscript.
Instead, all listed authors (including the student author) should have valid email addresses included in the “Other Authors” section of the submission in order to be cc’ed on all journal correspondence.
Once the adult corresponding author has followed the instructions provided in the email, uploaded your manuscript (written on the JEI template) and any other necessary files (i.e., figures, SRC/IRB/IACUC ethical approvals, Biorender licenses, etc.), the adult corresponding author will receive an email from our editorial platform asking them to review the PDF before they can officially submit.
The adult corresponding author should carefully review the PDF generated by our submission platform to ensure that 1) the correct file is uploaded and 2) all text/images are properly rendered. Most often, we see symbols that are copy and pasted from other sources do not display properly in the generated PDF; in these cases, we recommend using the “Insert–Symbol” function in Word for all symbols.
Once you have approved the PDF in the submission platform, you will receive a confirmation email.
Pre-review decisions take at least 2-3 weeks, and we ask that you wait at least 4 weeks after submission before inquiring about your submission status. During seasons with an increased number of submissions (notably summer and early fall), the pre-review deadline may be extended
